In this project, led by artists Carlos Torres Machado and Pablo Cavides, we developed a series of murals that reflect the multicultural identity and shared values of the International School for Liberal Arts. Working with both middle and high school students, the intervention sought to turn the school’s common areas into a visual narrative of unity and strength.

“Our strength is in our community.”

TThe murals feature a powerful combination of international flags, silhouetted figures holding hands, and organic floral patterns. These elements were designed to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of the students, representing the many nations that converge in the Bronx. The composition acts as a mirror for the student body, reinforcing the idea that while they come from different places, they are united by a common purpose and a supportive educational environment.

Beyond the flags, the inclusion of inspiring bilingual messages serves as a daily reminder of the importance of empathy and mutual support. The collaborative process between the professional muralists and the school community ensured that the final artwork was not only aesthetically striking but also deeply meaningful. The use of bright, saturated colors and high-quality materials guarantees that these symbols of community and belonging will continue to inspire students for years to come. This project exemplifies how public art in schools can transcend decoration to become a fundamental part of the institution’s culture and pride.

“We rise by lifting others.”
