Public art: giving life to the city beyong the gallery
ArteLatAm recently participated in the New York Build Expo, the premier event for construction, design, and urban development.
Throughout art history, artistic models have predominantly revolved around individual, collective, and thematic exhibitions. However, conceptual art, postmodernism, deconstruction, and transmodernity introduced significant shifts in these paradigms. In the 21st century, these changes moved beyond academic formalities, shedding traditional aesthetics to prioritize the pressing social transformations of the time.
In this context, ArteLatAm artists made a pivotal decision in 2016 to unite and transform their art studios into hubs of research and experimentation, giving rise to the ArteLatAm Collective. Their focus shifted to innovation and content, transcending the boundaries of formal disciplines to create art that resonates deeply with contemporary audiences. In addition to developing bodies of work and exhibitions, the artists of the ArteLatAm Collective extend beyond this focus to include Mural Projects and Educational Programs, which are carried out in partnership with the NYC DOE Schools.
The migration experience is a powerful and universal thread woven through the history of humanity. It represents not only the movement of people but the transformation of cultures and societies, marked by resilience, hope, and the quest for belonging. Migration, like art, is a profound form of storytelling; a means of conveying the struggles, triumphs, and cultural richness of individuals and communities across generations.
Aviajeros is a term that refers to immigrants as travelers on a journey with an uncertain outcome, it also serves as the title and central theme of this exhibition. The word encapsulates the courage, resilience, and determination of those who leave their homelands in search of safety, opportunity, and connection, often navigating unknown and perilous paths.
This linoleography edition of twenty-five prints and three artist’s proofs, in 11’ x 8.5”, deals with a very significant topic all over the world. Each artist created a tryptic with titles and images that reveal the five different aesthetic approaches.
The Migrant Experience is rooted in the history of the world. One can even say that it is rooted in humanity itself. Migration is not a one-way action, nor does it have only one reason for being or a specific beginning and end. The art experience is equally rooted in the world’s history. In the sentence above, the word ‘art’ can easily replace the word ‘migration’ and it would all still make perfect sense. Both terms are intertwined, and both have to do with origin and survival. Humanity has survived many natural disasters and wars. The suffering of people adrift, trying to escape violence, torture, famine, flooding, and more, frames situations like family separation and lives lost in the process of fleeing.
The Artelatam Collective participated in New York’s Art Fair “Art on Paper” in 2023 and 2024. This prestigious event celebrates innovation and creativity in contemporary art, and we are honored to be a part of it alongside an incredible group of artists representing the best of Latin American talent.
