In this project, led by artist Darwin Erazo, we proposed a series of advanced art classes where middle school students practiced various sophisticated art techniques. These workshops allowed students to explore diverse mediums, including printmaking and the creation of kinetic mobiles, drawing inspiration from the works of renowned artists such as Jesús Rafael Soto and Moses Ros.
“The art projects we developed were deeply connected to Hispanic cultural heritage, fostering a sense of identity and pride.”
A key component of the curriculum was a three-week intensive study on the origins and history of muralism. This theoretical foundation paved the way for the students to develop an abstract mural. Under expert guidance, the collective vision of the students was brought to life on the wall directly outside their art classroom, transforming the school’s hallway into a vibrant gallery of their own making.
By combining technical skill-building with a deep dive into cultural roots, the program at MS322 provided students with more than just artistic training; it offered a platform for leadership and self-expression through public art.
“This abstract mural stands as a testament to the student’s creativity and their connection to the visual history of their community.”
We Make It Real
ArteLatAm transforms New York City’s cultural identity through a professional bilingual structure that bridges public art and art education. As strategic allies, we transform urban spaces to empower communities while working inside schools to help children discover their potential through creativity. By combining technical rigor with passion, we ensure art serves as both a powerful social motor in the streets and a vital learning tool in the classroom.
