In the framework of the Summer Rising 2021 program, we developed a comprehensive artistic intervention led by artist Carlos Torres Machado. This project served 250 elementary school students, combining dynamic art classes with the creation of a large-scale hand-painted mural. The goal was to provide a creative outlet during the summer months, fostering social-emotional growth and artistic exploration.
“Summer Rising: Cultivating creativity and community through shared artistic experiences”
The program was designed to introduce young learners to the fundamentals of visual art while building the teamwork skills necessary for a collaborative project. Through a series of workshops, students explored color theory and composition, eventually contributing their ideas to the final mural design. The resulting artwork transformed the school environment into a more welcoming and vibrant space, reflecting the energy and potential of the Brooklyn youth.
By engaging such a large number of students, the project became a landmark of collective achievement within the school. Under the expert guidance of professional muralists, the students experienced the pride of seeing their individual efforts merge into a permanent symbol of their summer journey.
The use of high-quality materials ensures that this vibrant memory of the Summer Rising program will continue to brighten the school’s atmosphere for future generations of elementary students.
