In this project at the Bronx High School for Law and Community Service, led by artist Carlos Torres Machado, we developed a series of murals that celebrate the school’s dedication to justice, leadership, and public service. Working closely with high school students, the intervention aimed to create a visual environment that reflects the rigorous academic focus and the civic-minded spirit of the institution.

“Art as a medium for justice and community engagement.”

The murals were designed to serve as a daily inspiration for students preparing for careers in law and social advocacy. Through collaborative workshops, students explored how visual symbols can represent complex concepts like equity, responsibility, and community strength.

Under the professional guidance of Carlos Torres Machado, the participants moved from conceptual brainstorming to the technical execution of the mural, gaining a hands-on understanding of the power of public art as a tool for social communication.

The resulting artwork has transformed the school’s architecture into a narrative of empowerment. The bold colors and meaningful imagery provide a professional yet vibrant atmosphere that honors the students’ commitment to their community and their future professions

“These murals stand as a permanent tribute to the students’ aspirations and the transformative power of law and community service”
