The collaborative mural project developed at PS 23K Carter G. Woodson was designed as an empowering artistic experience where students actively contributed to transforming their school environment. Guided by teaching artist Carlos Torres, 148 young scholars engaged in creating “Roots of Unity, Branches of Success,” a striking 14 x 12 ft. mural that serves as a permanent visual reflection of their shared identity and collective strength.

The artwork features a vibrant tree composed of numerous colorful handprints, designed intentionally to be bold, accessible, and deeply collaborative. Set against the school’s classic brick architecture, the project integrated themes of inclusivity, academic growth, and community engagement. Furthermore, the mural honors the enduring legacy of Carter G. Woodson by encouraging students to explore concepts of self-identity, empowerment, and the transformative power of shared knowledge.
