The collaborative mural program developed at PS 23K Carter G. Woodson was designed as an empowering visual project centered on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and academic ambition. Guided by teaching artist Carlos Torres, participating students worked together to create “I Believe, I Am, I Can,” an expansive 56 x 8.4 ft. mural engineered to cultivate self-confidence, emotional well-being, and a shared sense of belonging within the school environment.

Throughout the creative process, young creators translated positive affirmations into bold, accessible visual forms. The composition features a central image of a flexed arm with a heart, beautifully balancing inner strength with empathy, while vibrant columns spelling out STEAM highlight science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. By blending self-affirming messages like “I believe I am strong, brave, loved” with dynamic academic imagery, the project actively fosters a growth mindset, creative thinking, and future-focused aspirations.
