The summer art residency program at PS 376 Felisa Rincón De Gautier was established as a vibrant space for exploration in the heart of Brooklyn.

During July and August, over 300 elementary students transformed their vacation time into an immersive creative experience, using art as a tool to strengthen their identity and connection to the community. Under the guidance of specialized instructors, the young learners explored techniques that foster fine motor skills and aesthetic decision-making, turning abstract concepts into tangible expressions of color and form.

“Art is the language that allows children to imagine the world they want to build.”

The sessions focused on collective creation and the use of diverse materials, allowing each student to contribute their unique vision to a shared body of work. By bringing these art classes into the school environment during the summer, the project not only addressed the summer learning gap but also honored the legacy of Felisa Rincón de Gautier by promoting values of public service and social commitment through creativity. The resulting works reflect a blend of joy and discipline, essential elements for holistic development in primary education.

Beyond the aesthetic outcome, this collaboration with the New York City Department of Education highlights the impact of the arts on students’ emotional well-being. By actively participating in the creative process, the children of PS 376 experienced firsthand how collaboration and an artistic focus can revitalize their school environment, turning Brooklyn classrooms into a beacon of multicultural expression and community pride.
