A mother’s journey at Artelatam
Art as a Legacy
At Artelatam, we often say that our mission transcends the boundaries of a traditional arts organization. We don’t just manage projects, curate exhibitions, or coordinate logistics; we live by a core philosophy that defines our every move: “We live in art.” This belief is not merely a corporate slogan—it is a life mission that our Project Manager, Cristina Barrera, brings to life every day, bridging the gap between professional leadership and the intentional upbringing of her daughter, Galilea.
Creative classroom
The journey of integrating art into daily life often begins with a single step into a space of inspiration. Recently, the historic halls of the Nassau County Museum of Art in Long Island served as the backdrop for one of these transformative experiences. As Galilea walked through the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building, surrounded by the serene gardens of Roslyn Harbor, she wasn’t just observing paintings on a wall—she was embarking on a journey of sensory and emotional discovery.
For Cristina, these visits are essential pillars of growth. She believes that exposing children to modern and contemporary art at a young age builds a foundation of critical thinking and empathy.
“Growing up surrounded by art isn’t just about admiring works; it’s about learning to see the world through sensitive, curious, and human eyes,” Cristina explains. “When I take Galilea to see a mural or a museum gallery, I am not just showing her colors; I am showing her that there are infinite ways to interpret reality and connect with the stories of others.”
Seasonal creativity
Beyond the formal galleries of New York’s iconic art spaces, Cristina ensures that art is a tactile, daily presence at home. This is where the Artelatam vision of “living in art” becomes a hands-on reality. By following the natural rhythm of the seasons, they transform ordinary moments into extraordinary creative workshops.
Whether it is the vibrant energy of summer murals or the cozy, imaginative atmosphere of the fall, every season offers a fresh canvas. This past Halloween, for example, became a celebration of imagination. From creating spooky themed illustrations to the intricate process of decorating pumpkins and designing seasonal murals, Cristina uses these activities to spark Galilea’s innate curiosity.
At Artelatam, we champion this approach because we know that art is not a static object to be kept at a distance—it is something to be felt, shared, and lived. By encouraging children to get their hands messy with paint or to ask “why” when looking at a sculpture, we are fostering the next generation of creative thinkers and cultural leaders.
Future legacy
The connection between Cristina’s role as Project Manager and her role as a mother is seamless. Her professional expertise in managing complex artistic visions allows her to curate a home environment where creativity is prioritized. This synergy is a testament to what we stand for as an organization: the belief that art is a powerful tool for social and personal transformation.
By connecting children to art today, we are giving them a unique language—a way to navigate the complexities of the world with beauty and humanity. As Galilea continues to explore, ask, and dream, she carries with her the legacy of Artelatam: the understanding that life, in its truest form, is the greatest masterpiece of all.
We invite our entire community to join us in this mission. Let us celebrate every generation’s unique way of finding its voice through art. Whether through a museum visit or a simple afternoon of crafts at home, remember: the most important thing is to keep the curiosity alive.
